Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany since 1949) is a federal state in Central Europe. It has consisted of 16 federal states since 1990 and is constituted as a free, democratic and social constitutional state. Founded in 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany is the latest manifestation of the German nation state first established in 1871. The federal capital and seat of government is Berlin. Germany has borders with nine countries and shares the North Sea and Baltic Sea in the north and Lake Constance and the Alps in the south. It lies in the temperate zone. Today's Germany has a good 83 million inhabitants in an area of 357,588 square kilometers with an average of 232 inhabitants per square kilometer.
