Southeast Asia, formerly known as Farther India, is part of the Asian continent and comprises the countries to the east of India and south of China. The region is subdivided into the Southeast Asian mainland (the Hinterindische Peninsula) and insular Southeast Asia (the Malay Archipelago), which includes Indonesia (excluding the western part of New Guinea, which is already part of Melanesia), the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Philippines, Brunei, East Timor and parts of Malaysia. Most of the countries in Southeast Asia are members of the international Southeast Asian organization ASEAN, which is headquartered in Jakarta.
