The first Oktoberfest took place in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.

The original celebration included a horse race and was held outside Munich's city gates. The location was named Theresienwiese ("Therese's Meadow") in honor of the bride.

Over more than 200 years, the event developed into the world's largest folk festival.
