Cebu Island - Malapascua

Malapascua Island is a small tropical island located about 7 km off the northern tip of Cebu in the Central Visayas. Measuring only about 2.5 km long, it is known worldwide as one of the best diving destinations in the Philippines. Malapascua is internationally famous as one of the world's best places to dive with thresher sharks, especially at nearby Kimud Shoal and Monad Shoal. Despite its international reputation among divers, the island has retained a relaxed atmosphere with sandy paths instead of roads and no cars. Malapascua offers a relaxed nightlife rather than a party scene. Most bars close around midnight because many divers wake before sunrise for thresher shark dives. Those looking for vibrant nightlife like Boracay or Cebu City will find Malapascua much quieter. According to the latest 2024 census, the island has an estimated population of 6,129.

Top Sights & Activities

  • Bounty Beach: The island's main beach with powdery white sand, beachfront resorts, restaurants, and diving centers. It's the heart of Malapascua.
  • Langob Beach: A quiet beach on the northern coast, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and photography.
  • Lighthouse Viewpoint: A short hike rewards visitors with panoramic views over the Visayan Sea, especially beautiful at sunrise.
  • Dakit-Dakit Island: A tiny island connected by a sandbar at low tide, popular for snorkeling and kayaking.
  • Island Hopping: Boat trips to visit nearby islands and beaches, often including snorkeling stops.

Malapascua is the best place in the world to see wild pelagic thresher sharks (Pelagic thresher shark) on a regular basis. The sharks rise from deep water to visit cleaning stations, where small cleaner wrasse remove parasites from their skin. This unique behavior makes close encounters possible for scuba divers.
